Underlayment & Ice & Water Barrier
Underlayment and ice & water barrier are the hidden heroes of every roof. They're your last line of defense if a shingle is ever blown off or damaged. TrueCraft installs synthetic underlayment and self-adhering ice & water shield on every roof replacement — no exceptions — to meet or exceed New York State building code requirements.
What Makes TrueCraft's Underlayment & Ice & Water Barrier Different
Ice & Water Shield (Required by Code)
Self-adhering membrane applied to the first 3 feet of every eave and in all valleys — prevents ice dam damage that is extremely common on Long Island.
Synthetic Underlayment
Far superior to old felt paper — synthetic underlayment is stronger, lighter, and holds up to weather exposure during installation.
Valley Protection
All valleys receive additional ice & water shield coverage — these are the highest-risk areas for water infiltration.
Deck Sealing
All nail penetrations through ice & water shield self-seal around the nail — preventing water wicking even in the most severe storms.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an ice dam?
Ice dams form when heat escapes through your roof, melts snow, and the meltwater refreezes at the cold eave. The ice backs up and can force water under shingles — ice & water shield prevents this.
How far up the roof does ice & water barrier go?
New York State code requires ice & water shield to extend at least 24" beyond the interior wall line — typically 3–4 feet up from the eave.
Is felt paper acceptable instead of synthetic underlayment?
Code allows felt in some cases, but we always use synthetic — it's dramatically more resistant to tearing and moisture during installation.
Does underlayment need to be replaced with every new roof?
Yes — all underlayment should be replaced at every full roof replacement. Never reroof over old underlayment.
